Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How do I enable my browser to display pop-ups from the DEA GIS website? Click for response
A: If you are using:
- Google Chrome
- Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
- Select Settings.
- Click Show advanced settings.
- In the "Privacy" section, click the Content settings button.
- In the "Pop-ups" section, click Manage exceptions.
- Click the "Hostname pattern" field and enter 10.112.66.31
- Use the dropdown menu to select: Allow
- Internet Explorer 10
- Open up Internet Explorer and click the Tools button in the top toolbar.
- Select Internet Options, and then click the Privacy tab.
- Click the Settings button next to Pop-Up blocker.
- Enter the 10.112.66.31 to allow pop-ups for in the text box.
- Click Close, and then Apply.
- Firefox
- Click the menu button and choose Options.
- Select the Content panel.
- Make sure the Block pop-up windows checkbox is checked.
- To the right of Block pop-up windows, click the Exceptions.
- In the Address of website type: 10.112.66.31 and click Allow.
- Click Close.
- Click OK to close the Options window.
Q: How do I download the attribute data associated with a layer? Click for response
A: Follow these steps:
- Make sure that the layer of interest is visible by expanding the layer list to check, if the layer is marked.
- Zoom out until all of the boundary of the district is displayed.
- Click on the small arrow located at the bottom of the map, center of the page to display the attribute Table.
- After few seconds the "Attribute Table" tool will display all the attributes for all displayed layers. Click on the tab with the layer name of interest to display its attributes.
- Click on "Table Options" located at the right top corner of the "Attribute Table" tool and select "Export the attributes to a CSV file".
Q: What are the layers used in DEA GIS Library and when were they last updated? Click for response
You can view the layer list by subject listed in this
Layer List. Last Date Updated: 03/10/2020 (note: if current is denoted in the LASTUPDATED column, this means it comes directly from the original source REST service)
Q: Why is the application not loading in my browser? Click for response
Make sure you are using the Chrome browser when using this map, although Firefox works we recommend Google Chrome for the best results. Internet Explorer will not work.
Q: Can I see a list of updates that have been made to this map? Click for response
After the site loads, all updates are listed in a link in the upper right corner. Click here to View.
Q: Can I be added to an email list to be notified when announcements and changes are made to this application? Click for response
Q: I want to use these layers in ArcGIS Desktop, can I export them? Click for response
You cannot export the layers directly, but if you add a user connection to ArcGIS Server with our REST services you can then drag Feature Layers into ArcMap.

- Open ArcMap.
- Open the Catalog under Windows.
- Click “Add ArcGIS Server” and select “Use GIS Services”.
- Enter the following URL: https://svctenvims.dot.ca.gov/dea_dmz/rest/services.
- You can now view all the services used on the DEA GIS Library.
- The folders which begin with “EnvLib” match the category tabs on DEA GIS Library.
- You can drag the layers into ArcMap, use export tools to make a copy.
- You will notice there are two of every layer. Only the one with the grey square in the icon.
Q: I have turned layers on and off and after while the layers begin to not work anymore. Why is this? Click for response
All layers on the GIS Library are statewide, and many are very detailed. You must turn them on one at a time, and given some time to load. If the layers do not appear because of this issue, you just need to reload the site.
Q: I work with specific district layers and other layers, can I view them on this application? Click for response
Although the GIS Library is meant to be a statewide mapping application, you could add district specific layers and others through the Add Data tool.

Q: This application is very complicated, is there a tutorial on how to use it? Click for response

Q: I use SER, STEVE and other environmental resources, how can this application assist me? Click for response
The DEA GIS Library has over 300 environmental layers which can be activated along side project boundaries. For example, this can be a useful resource for completing projects in the PEAR phase.
Q: How can I search where certain layers are located within the library? Click for response
Above the GIS Library window is a search bar that you can use to find specific layers and see what tabs they are located in.
